How to stay motivated when working from home

I’ve been self-employed since – let me just check my CV – November 1997. I know a little about working from home and how to stay motivated. So I thought I’d share my top tips:

  • Have a work zone. It doesn’t have to be a whole room, but it should be a space that you only work in, so when you’re there, you’re in work mode.
  • Keep regular hours. They don’t have to be “normal” office hours, but they should be carved out in your schedule, and at least some should overlap with conventional office hours. During those hours, you work.
  • If you’re struggling to get going, arrange your to-do’s from easiest/fastest to hardest/most time-consuming. Start with the small things – that way you change to-do’s into a list of ta-da’s and create momentum.
  • Schedule breaks. Your brain needs them, and so does your body. Take tea, take lunch, go for a stroll, hang out some laundry – and then sit down and try again.

It’s not easy, but the trick is to stay with it. Progress, not perfection.
